Client: Hally Hair
A temporary hair coloring innovation designed to be intuitive, mess-free, and effective on all hair types.
Brief:
The Hally Hair team came with the ask to design a hair streaker for tweens that has an “Instragrammable” experience, noticeable color pay-off, and works on every type of hair.
This project started with formula research + recommendation, all the way through ideation, concept testing, usability research and preference testing, through to factory handoff.
Role: Project Lead Timeline: 8 Weeks (part time)

Identifying a fomula
To identify a formula, I recruited friends + family to test a range of competitive formulas. Part of the recruit criteria entailed finding participants with a diverse range of hair types to ensure we were collecting feedback from a diverse range of candidates at an early stage.
Formula Criteria
Mess Free
Avoid formulas/steps that create a mess, form approach should give users control over the action, and formula shouldn’t shed during application/ in use.
Even Distribution
Ensure formula doesn’t clump, build up, flake, etc.
Form shouldn’t rely on strong pressure to apply color
Avoid small tooth combs that ruin hairstyle/break up curls
Intuitive Steps
Provide clearly defined steps that give users confidence they are using the product correctly.

Usability + Preference Testing
Desired Learnings
01 Performance
What works the best across all hair types?
Where do failures occur?
02 Ease + Reliability
How easy or difficult is the application experience?
Can participants reliably use prototype as anticipated?
03 Preference
Which concept do participants like the most, and why?
Testing Feedback
Form iterations
Applicator iterations
In parallel to form development, I tested a variety of different applicator geometries + materials with the intended lotion-like formula.
